A Dream in the Clouds

A politically-neutral collection of poetry, prose, and art inspired by the 2008 United States Presidential Election

Featuring my poem “Over Here, Over There,” first published in Drash Northwest Mosaic. My poem was inspired by poet Jayson Iwen. His work and essay on Zajal was published in the same journal of Knock as a poem of mine—read his interview. Intrigued with the 12th Century Arabic folk song tradition Zajal, an interactive call and response form usually with music, I wrote my poem using this form loosely as a guide. The poem, in columns, can be read separately and as one. I read “Over Here, Over There” as three poems, each individual column, then across.

Letters to the World: Poems from the Wom-po Listserv

edited by Moira Richards, Rosemaru Starace, & Lesley Wheeler. Published by Red Hen Press, it is available on Amazon. Julene’s poem A Family Visit is published in this anthology. A review is found in Prairie Schooner Volume 83, Number 3, Fall 2009.

BLURB:  Panoramic in scope, these Letters to the World and from the world of the on-line Wom-Po LISTSERV exult in a constellation of voices both individual and now connected. I can’t help but think of Emily Dickinson, whose line provides the title for this anthology, privately binding her poems with needle and thread and storing them away. It’s a gift that we have these poems available from a community that is passionate about poetry and women’s voices. It’s a conversation in which we should all be engaged. It’s a new cosmos. Imagine if Dickinson had been able to log on. —Gary Short, author of Theory of Twilight, Flying Over Sonny Liston, and 10 Moons and 13 Horses

As prize winner, her poem was published in their exhibition catalogue. She read her poem at their exhibition opening ceremony on World AIDS Day, December 1, 2005

“The theme of “Unfinished Work” is meant to symbolize all that remains to be done in helping those affected with HIV/AIDS and to prevent the spread of HIV. While we have seen many medical breakthroughs and people are living longer, healthier lives, many are still facing on-going illness and infection reates are continuing to rise. With no cure or vacination on the horizon, we are likely to be battling this epidemic for years to come. What lies ahead is our “unfinished work.” Each submission should reflect the artist’s hope, desparation, celebration, fear, or dream about HIV/AIDS and the work left to be done.” It was a juried show with catagories of Visual arts, Multi-Media/Film, Creative Writing, and Music. The poetry judge was Eloise Klein Healy. Poet Eloise Klein Healy the founding chair of Antioch LA’s pioneering MFA in Creative Writing program.
